Chapter 15 · 15.6
Calendar or contacts don't show up on the phone
You've connected your WebOké Nextcloud to your phone, but you don't see any appointments or contacts? Or a new appointment on your phone doesn't appear in your Nextcloud? It's almost always one of the causes below. Work through them from top to bottom.
Quick check
| What do you see? | Likely cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| The phone says the password is wrong, or shows 401 or Unauthorized | You're using your normal password. Because of the login code (two-factor authentication), that doesn't work for calendar and contacts. | Create an app password (App passwords: when and how to use them) and use that instead of your normal password. On Android, DAVx5 can also log in via your Nextcloud login screen; DAVx5 then creates an app password itself (see Calendar and contacts on Android with DAVx5). |
| The account can't be found or the connection fails | The server address is incorrect. | Enter the address without typos, with https:// in front of it. If that doesn't work, use the full address from the table below. |
| It worked at first, but now suddenly doesn't anymore | You've changed your password or revoked the app password, or your IP address is being temporarily throttled. | Create a new app password and enter it on the phone. See also Multiple invalid login attempts: why you're being slowed down and how to fix it. |
| The account is set up, but you don't see any appointments | The calendar isn't switched on in your phone's calendar app. | iPhone: open Calendar and tap Calendars at the bottom, tick your Nextcloud calendars. Android: switch on the calendars in DAVx5 and in your calendar app. |
| New appointments from your phone don't appear in your Nextcloud | Your phone saves new appointments to a different default calendar (iCloud, Google or On My iPhone). | Choose your Nextcloud calendar when creating an appointment, or set it as the default calendar. |
| On Android, syncing is lagging behind | DAVx5 is being paused by Android's battery saving, or the sync interval is set too long. | Exclude DAVx5 from battery optimisation and shorten the sync interval. See Calendar and contacts on Android with DAVx5. |
| You see the calendars, but no contacts (or the other way round) | You've only added CalDAV or only CardDAV, or the address book is switched off. | iPhone: also add a CardDAV account. Android: also tick the address book in DAVx5. |
| A calendar someone shared with you is missing | The phone only shows calendars it found during setup. | Refresh the calendar list (iPhone: pull the Calendars list down; DAVx5: refresh the list) and tick the calendar. |
| Tasks don't appear in Memories or in your tasks app | The list was created in your Nextcloud as a calendar without a task list, or your tasks app isn't connected. | See Tasks on your phone: Reminders on the iPhone, Tasks.org on Android. |
The addresses you need
Replace <your-address> with the address you use to open your Nextcloud in your browser, for example yourname.webokecloud.nl or cloud.yourcompany.com, and <username> with your username.
| What it's for | Address |
|---|---|
| General address (DAVx5, Thunderbird, Outlook) | https://<your-address>/remote.php/dav |
| iPhone, iPad and Mac if the short address doesn't work | https://<your-address>/remote.php/dav/principals/users/<username>/ |
| One calendar (for example your Personal calendar) | https://<your-address>/remote.php/dav/calendars/<username>/personal/ |
| Your default Contacts address book | https://<your-address>/remote.php/dav/addressbooks/users/<username>/contacts/ |
You can copy the general address and the address for iPhone, iPad and Mac from your Nextcloud under Calendar settings (see Calendar and contacts on the iPhone and iPad). You can copy the address of a single calendar using Internal link in the Edit calendar window (see Sharing, publishing and embedding calendars in your website).
Check whether it's your Nextcloud
- Log in to your WebOké Nextcloud in your browser and open the Calendar app. Is the appointment there? Then the problem is with the connection to your phone.
- Go to Settings, Security. Under Devices & sessions you can see whether your phone is listed and when it last connected. If it's not listed, the phone has never logged in successfully.
- Can't you log in via the browser either, or is your Nextcloud slow? Check Nextcloud is unreachable or slow: check this first first.
Tip: if in doubt, remove the account on your phone, revoke the old app password (Viewing, revoking, or remotely wiping devices and sessions) and set it up again with a new app password. That's often quicker than troubleshooting. Use a separate app password for each device, so you always know which device has which access.
Still not working after that? Contact WebOké (see How to report a problem to WebOké) and mention which device and app you're using, the address you entered and the error message you see. Never send your password or app password.
