Chapter 15 · 15.5
Photo upload on your phone stops
Automatic upload sometimes stops without a clear notification. This is usually caused by battery saving or your phone's permissions. Go through the list for your phone.
First: is the app working at all?
- Open the Nextcloud app. Can you see your files? If not, log in again. Does your Nextcloud work in the browser? See Nextcloud is unreachable or slow: check this first.
- Is your storage full? Check in the browser at the bottom left under Files. A full Nextcloud stops every upload. See Storage full: making room or upgrading.
- Update the app via the App store or Google Play.
iPhone and iPad
| Check | Where |
|---|---|
| Automatic upload is still switched on, for photos and videos | Nextcloud app, More, Settings, Auto upload photos |
| The app has access to all photos, not just a limited selection | iPhone Settings, Apps, Nextcloud, Photos |
| Background App Refresh is switched on | iPhone Settings, General, Background App Refresh |
| Low Power Mode is switched off | iPhone Settings, Battery |
| Upload via wifi only, while you don't have wifi | Setting Use Wi-Fi connection only in the Nextcloud app |
| Photos are only in iCloud (iCloud Photos with Optimise iPhone Storage) | The app has to fetch them from iCloud first; this is slow. Leave the app open on wifi. |
After that: open the Nextcloud app and leave it open for a while, plugged in and on wifi. iOS only lets apps run briefly in the background, so most uploads happen while the app is open. See also the tips in Automatically uploading photos.
Android
| Check | Where |
|---|---|
| The folder (for example Camera) is still switched on for automatic upload | Nextcloud app, menu, Settings, Auto upload. A folder can be switched off after an app update. |
| The app has Access to all files, or access to photos and videos | Android Settings, Apps, Nextcloud, Permissions, or under Special app access |
| Battery set to Unrestricted (no battery optimisation) | Android Settings, Apps, Nextcloud, Battery. The Nextcloud app itself warns you if Battery optimisation or battery saver is blocking uploads. |
| Background use of mobile data, if you don't upload via wifi only | Android Settings, Apps, Nextcloud, Mobile data |
| Upload only while charging or only via wifi | The folder's settings under automatic upload |
After that: on the Auto upload screen, tap Sync now to start without waiting. Check Uploads in the menu to see which uploads have failed; you can retry them there. Has it stopped working since an app update? See Resuming photo upload on Android after an app update.
Tip: some brands (such as Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei and OnePlus) have an extra mode that puts apps to sleep. Look in your phone's settings for sleeping apps or app hibernation, and remove Nextcloud from that list.
Uploading missed photos afterwards
Are photos from a certain period missing? Upload them manually: in the Nextcloud app, open the folder your photos go to, tap + and choose to upload photos or videos. Select the missing photos. If a photo already exists, the app asks what you want to do, so you won't end up with duplicates.
