Multiple accounts and folders in one app

One desktop app can keep track of several accounts and several folders at the same time. Handy if you have your own package as well as an account with a union, or if you have a paid package alongside Nextcloud Free.

Adding a second account

  1. Click the cloud icon and then on your name at the top.
  2. Choose Add account.
  3. You go through the same steps as the first time: enter the address, log in in the browser with your login code, Grant access and choose what you want to synchronise. See Installing Nextcloud Files on Windows.
  4. Choose a different local folder than for your first account, for example Nextcloud Union.

In the cloud icon's window, you switch between your accounts at the top. In the settings, each account has its own section.

Linking an extra folder

You can also link a separate folder on your computer with a folder in your Nextcloud, for example your Documents folder with a Laptop Documents folder in your Nextcloud.

  1. Open the app's settings and choose your account.
  2. Click Add Folder Sync Connection.
  3. Choose the folder on your computer (Choose a local folder to sync) and then the folder in your Nextcloud (Choose a remote destination folder). Use Create to make a new one there.
  4. Confirm. From then on, the app synchronises the folder just like the regular Nextcloud folder.

Please note: don't link a folder that's already inside your Nextcloud folder, or one that's also tracked by OneDrive, Dropbox or iCloud. This causes duplicate files and conflicts.

Please note: on Mac with File Provider, linking separate folders doesn't work; there, each account appears as its own location in Finder under Places.

Removing a link or account

  • A folder: click the three dots next to the folder in the settings, Delete folder sync connection. The files stay in your Nextcloud and on your computer; they just stop being tracked.
  • An account: in the settings next to the account, use the button to sign out or delete the account. Signing out keeps the link, deleting removes it completely.

Tip: want to move your files from Nextcloud Free to a paid package? You don't need to synchronise two accounts side by side for that. Read From Nextcloud Free to a paid package, or from another Nextcloud provider.
