Your website on Shopify, Wix or Squarespace, your domain and email with WebOké
Is your website hosted on Shopify, Wix, Squarespace or another platform, but you want to keep your domain and email with WebOké? That's no problem at all. You just point the website records to the platform. Your email keeps working with us as usual.
How to link your domain to the platform
- First make a backup of your DNS, see Making and restoring a backup of your DNS.
- Add your domain in the platform. Choose the option to connect a domain you already own, without changing the nameservers (at Wix this is called the pointing method, at Shopify connect manually). The platform will then show you which records to set.
- Open the DNS of your domain: in My WebOké under My Domains, tab DNS, or in DirectAdmin under DNS Management.
- Change the A record for @ (your domain itself) to the IP address of the platform.
- Delete the AAAA record for @. That points to the IPv6 address of our server. If you leave it, visitors with IPv6 will still land on your old site, or on an error page.
- Create a CNAME record for www pointing to the name provided by the platform, with a dot at the end. If there's already an A or AAAA record for www, delete that first.
- Add any extra records required by the platform, such as a TXT or CNAME record to verify domain ownership.
- Click verify in the platform. The platform will then automatically create an SSL certificate for your domain.
Examples
Always use what the platform shows you: the values can change. At the time of writing, these are the records:
| Platform | A record for @ | CNAME record for www |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify | 23.227.38.65 | shops.myshopify.com. |
| Wix | the IP address from your Wix dashboard, for example 185.230.63.107 | pointing.wixdns.net. |
| Squarespace | four A records: 198.185.159.144, 198.185.159.145, 198.49.23.144 and 198.49.23.145 | ext-cust.squarespace.com., plus an extra CNAME record with a unique code pointing to verify.squarespace.com. |
Records you should leave alone
Your email stays with WebOké. So don't delete or change these records:
- the MX records: that's where your mail comes in;
- the record for mail (or the wildcard
*, which also covers mail.yourdomain.nl); - the SPF record (TXT, starts with
v=spf1), the DKIM recordx._domainkeyand the DMARC record_dmarc.
Does the platform also send mail on behalf of your domain, for example order confirmations or newsletters via Shopify Email? Then the platform often asks for a few CNAME records for DKIM. For the name, only fill in the first part (DNS Management adds the domain name itself), and put a dot at the end of the value. If the platform asks for an SPF include, add it to your existing SPF record: there can only be one. See Adding or changing an SPF record in DirectAdmin.
Do you have a hosting package with WebOké?
Your mailboxes simply stay in your package. The website in the package will no longer be visited. If you only still need the package for your email, an email package is cheaper. Read Your email elsewhere: Microsoft 365, Google Workspace or your own mail server if you actually want to move your email elsewhere.
Common mistakes
- The platform says the records are incorrect. Often the AAAA record for @ is still there, or there's a second A record. Or the change isn't visible everywhere yet: wait an hour. You can check it yourself, see Checking DNS yourself with nslookup, dig and online tools.
- The website works, but mail no longer arrives. This means the nameservers were switched to the platform after all, and the MX records or the record for mail are missing there. Switch the nameservers back to ns1.webawere.nl and ns2.webawere.nl, or create the mail records at the platform.
- A CNAME record isn't working. The dot at the end is probably missing, see CNAME records and the dot at the end.
- The platform can't create an SSL certificate. Is there a CAA record in your DNS? Then the platform's certificate issuer also needs to be listed there, or remove the CAA record.
